TARIFFS AND SUBSIDIES
Mli. POLSON’S PREFERENCE [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] FEILDING, September 1. Mr. W. J. Polson, Dominion president of the Farmers' Union, in an address at a public meeting last evening urged the adoption of a system of subsidies to the Dominion secondary industries in preference to tariffs. He favoured the abolition of the wheat duties provided all other protective duties were abolished. He approved of the Central Reserve Bank, but desired complete State control. Referring to restriction on our exports, he said that within a year New Zealand would have to face either restriction or levies by Great Britain, perhaps both. Either would be very serious for the farmer. He hoped a satisfactory arrangement would be made. He was favourable to the proposals for establishment of a finance corporation by the Government provided the State controlled it and not. private financial interests.
