HOCKEY
AUSTRALIANS V. CANTERBURY. [per press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 1. The touring Australian representatives beat Canterbury at hockey today by two goals to one. The Australians were definitely superior in combination and stick play. The Canterbury players did not lack speed and were often quicker at moving to the ball, but gave away too many breaches of off-side, obstruction, and knock-on. The game was a good, clean exhibition of hockey. Canterbury scored the first goal after only a few minutes’ play, when, after some swift exchanges, a good centre by Ford gave Rushbridge a chance to rush into the circle and -score a fine goal. Australia attacked hard after
this reverse. A penalty bully was awarded against the Canterbury goalkeeper for holding the ball in the goal mouth. Milner won the penalty bully for Australia, and scored the equalising goal. This was the score at half time. Australia had command of the play in the opening minutes ofi the second spell, but several strenuous attacks were well stopped by Andrews and Barnhill for Canterbury. Australia’s efforts were rewarded at last when Allen found the net with a brilliant Hying shot. For the remainder of the game, play was fast and fairly even, the final score being: Australia 2, Canterbury 1.

COAST PLAYER INJURED In their first game, the Coast ladies were unfortunate to lose one of their best players, Miss R. Stapleton, who, being struck above the left eye by a rising ball, suffered an injury which necessitated the insertion of several stitches. At the time of the accident, in the first spell, there was no score, and the Coasters had been doing -well. The unfortunate accident upset the combination, and general play of the team. Miss Stapleton made a good recovery, and will probably play later in the tournament. INTER-PROVINCIAL MATCHES WELLINGTON, September 2. Wairarapa 1, Wellington 1. AUCKLAND, September 2.
