AMERICA’S CUP DEFENDER. [BY CABLE —PBESS.ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] NEWPORT (Rhode Island, Sept. 1. Mr Harold Vanderbilt’s yacht Rainbow, was chosen to-night as the defender for the America's Cup against the British challenger Endeavour. The Rainbow’s selection was announced by the New York Yacht Club, after she had scored her third successive victory ovejr “Yankee*” by the slim margin of one second. The “Rainbow” is financed by a group of millionaires. She is equipped with a metal mast, a bending boom, and all sorts of mechanical devices. CRUISE TO TAHITI. AUCKLAND, September 1. The yacht Ngataki left Auckland shortly after three this afternoon, on a cruise to Tahiti. On board are J. Wray (owner and master), R. Willington, N. Watson and P. McMahon. The yacht is provisioned for three months. She will make the first call at Sunday Island. She has a small auxiliary engine. Wray expressed his intention to be back in time to compete in the race to Melbourne, starting on December S. The Ngataki left with the Royal New Zealand Yacht squadron's burgee at its masthead, and the ’red ensign flying from the gaff end of the yacht. Three hearty cheers were given as the yacht moved away from the wharf with the engine going. Once clear of the wharf, the mainsail and stay-sail were hoisted, and the yacht made good time down the harbour on the first part of her long cruise.
