GOLD SECRET KEPT

BAND REVELATIONS. JOHANNESBURG, July 21. New light on the discovery of the Rand goldfields has been shed by researches by Mr. J. P. Nel in the Union archives in Pretoria. These researches show that gold was mined>in the Rand in 1853, about 30 years before the later pioneers arrived, and that the real discoverer was P. J. Marais, who exhibited a sample of valuable ore at the Volksraad in Potchefstroom at the begin-, nig of 1854. Marais, it is thought, agreed to keep the discoveries secret from the outside world on pain of death.
