GOLF

KAY-GAISFORD SUCCESS. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] SYDNEY,, August 31. Although they dropped five strokes as compared with their morning round, the New Zealand golfers, Misses Kay and Gaisford, played well enough this afternoon to win the Australian Women’s Foursome Championship on the Royal Sydney links.. Fine rain fell during the day, and parts of the course were under water. In the morning round Miss Kay was hitting with the woods well, but she could not find touch on the greens. Miss Gaisford however, putted excellently. Missed short putts and visits to the rough’ produced two sevens in their afternoon round, but two “birdies” partly made up for these lapses. Miss Kernot and Mrs Bettington, who were only one stroke worse than the New Zealanders in the morning round, crashed badly in the afternoon, returning a card of 99. Miss Hammond and Mrs McKay had an amazing eagle three at the 551 yards seventh hole. The former hit a great tee shot, Mrs McKay followed with an equally good second, and Miss Hammond then holed out with a full mashie-niklick. The leaders’ scores were: — Misses Kay and Gaisford (New Zealand) 82 —87—169; Mrs T. S. McKay and Miss J. Hammond (New South Wales) 87—85 —172; Miss V. Ebert and Miss P. Sydney Jones (New South Wales) 86 —86—172; Miss P. Nankivill and Miss B. Bailey (Victoria) 87— 88—175; Mrs A. Russell and Miss C. Lascelles (Victoria) 87 —90—177. The handicap foursomes, based on the first IS holes of the championship foursomes, was won by Miss B. Kernot (Geelong) and Mrs R. H. Bettington (New South Wales) 53—6—76. Misses Kay and Gaisford were second with 82—1—81.
