It is understood that the British Cabinet has urged Lord Willingdon to accept an extension of his term of office as Viceroy,, in order to inaugurate the new reforms and direct policy. Lord, Willingdon sadly needs a rest, but it is believed he may undertake a special term of office for three years, when his present appointment expires. He says that he is anxious to see a self-governing India in being. “GRETNA’ FOR CHILD BRIDES. CALCUTTA, August 31. Yanam, a small town in Pondichery, which is French territory, has become the Gretna Green of India. Since the passing of the Sarada Act., which forbids child marriages in India, parents whose anxiety to get their girls married begins at their birth, undertake pilgrimages to Yanam, where, by the payment of 16 rupees to the French Government, child marriages are performed. Yanam claims 60 marriages in the past two days, the brides being of any age from 15 down to five years. When the brides are very young, they are given candy, to keep them quiet during the ceremony.
