ANNUAL CONFERENCE. [per tress association.] WELLINGTON, August 29. A decision to support the abolition of the bobby calf industry, and in the meantime, to advocate certain reforms in the control of the industry, was reached at the annual meetin a’ of the Federated New Zealand Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals. The President (Mr. G. Mitchell) said tiie industry was quite nauseating. Among the remits carried were requests to the Government to prohibit the shooting of captive birds, and the coursing of hares In enclosures; that the funds of S.P.C.A. societies be subsidised by the State, and that free passage be provided for inspectors. The introduction of a bill to provide for the compulsory destruction of horn core on calves was urged by a deputation, which waited upon the Minister of Agriculture. Mr. Macmillan gave ail undertaking to have a bill on dehorning drafted, and said he would refer it to the Prime Minister to see whether there was time to proceed with it this session.
