EMPIRE games CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS. (BY OKBEE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, August 11. At the Empire Games, the thousand metres cycle championship resulted: E. Gray (Australia) 76 2-ssecs 1; L. McLeod (Canada) Ssecs, 2; E. Clayton (South Africa) 73 3-5 secs 3. In the thousand metres time trial results were: A. Harvell (England) 81 3-5 secs; Grose (New Zealand) 80 2-ssecs.; E. Clayton (South Africa) 58 3-ssecs.; Gray (Australia) 56 3-ssecs. ’
In the, thousand yards Empire Championship, Grose (N.Z.) beat D. McKenzie (Rhodesia) in the concluding reperchage, in 108 3"ssecs. The semi-finals resulted: First: H. Pethybridge (Australia) 1; Grose (New Zealand) 2. Time 128 secs. Second: Higgins 1, Clayton 2. Time 319 secs. which was terribly slow, the men only sprinting over the last 220 yards. Final: E. Higgins (England) 1; •Pethybridge (Australia) -2. Time 118 2-sse"cs. Won by a' length. Clayton (161 secs. was third, and Grose fourth.
The ten miles. Empire Cycling Championship resulted as follows: — R. McLeod (Canada) 1; Clayton (South Africa) 2; Harwell (England) 3; Grose (New Zealand) 4. Time 24min 26 l-ssecs. Nine countries competed. The Australians, Gray and Pethybridge, had tyre trouble. McKenzie (Rhodesia) met with an accident. In a desperate finish with a bunched field, McLeod overhauled Clayton and won by inches only. Clayton had a most busy afternoon. He won the 1000 yards invitation scratch race in 94secs, in which the majority of the oversea competitors did not compete, reserving themselves for the ten mile race. BOXING CHAMPIONS. The boxing title winners were:— Flyweight: P. Palmer (England). Featherweight: C. Catterall (South Africa). Welterweight: D. McLeave (England).
Light-heavyweight: G. F. Brennan (England)., Heavyweight: H. P. Floyd (England). Lightweight final: Cook (Australia) beat N. Taylor (Wales). Bantamweight final: F. Ryan ;(Eugland) outpointed A. Barnes (Wales). Middleweight final: A. Shawyer (England) beat L. Wadsworth (Canada).
LOVELOCK DEFEATS BONTHRON
(Rec. August 13, 11 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, August 12. In the international athletic nj,eeting, Lovelock defeated Bonthron (U.S.A.), in the fifteen hundred metres by fourfifths of a second. Cornes was third. Time 233 3-10 sec. High Jump: Johnston (United States) sixty-five inches; Metcalfe, sixty-three inches. Hop, Step and Jump: Metcalfe 585?! inches. Pole Vault: Woodhouse 1531 inches. WOMEN’S CONTESTS. LONDON, August 11. The women’s world games wero held at White City. Results:— 100 Metres (final): Fraulein Krass (Germany) 1; Miss Walasiewicz (Poland) 2; Miss Hiscock (England) 3. Time 11 9-10 sec. This is a British record.
60 Metres (final): Miss Walasiewicz 1; Fraulein Kuhlmann (Germany) 2; Miss Johnson (England) 3. Time 7 3-ssec.
800 Metres (final): Miss Koubkova (Czechoslovakia) 1; Miss Wretman (Sweden) 2; Miss Lunn (England) 3. Time 2min 12 2-ssec. This is a world record.
200 Metres (final): Fraulein Krauss 1; Miss Walasiewicz 2; Miss Hiscock 3. Time 24 9-10 sec. This is a British record.
The discus throw was won by Miss Wajsowna (Poland) 143 ft SJin. This is a world record.
SO Metres Hurdles (final): Fraulein Englehardt (Germany) 1; Miss Taylor (Canada) 2; Miss Clark (South Africa) 3. Time 11 3-ssec. This is a world’s record.
