MELBOURNE—S.I. SERVICE
OBJECTIONS TO MAHENO [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, May 14. An influential deputation to Mr. A. Hamilton this morning, regarding the proposed Melbourne-South Island service, urged that the Maheno was so unsuitable that they would prefer no service to hers; that the proposed fares were too high; that the service was commencing a month too late, and that Tasmania should be in the itinerary.
Mr. TI. C. Campbell said that the Maheno w;as so (unsuitable that it would be wrong to grant a subsidy. There were three other companies in Australia, for whom it would be a golden chance to start a service. The Minister promised to discuss the matter with the Premier, and his colleagues, expressing, however, some surprise that the deputation would sooner have no service than the Maheno.
