WOMEN TEACHERS

CONFERENCE DEMANDS. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 12. Grading and other important questions affecting the profession were discussed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Women Teachers’ Association. The conference reaffirmed the principle that senior women in 2 A positions should be placed in No. 4 grading group. Other remits passed included that the £3O special allowance previously paid to senior women teachers, had been unjustly withdrawn, as it was virtually part of the salary. That the present basis of staffing is proving inequitable and unjust in its incidence, when schools fall in grade. That in the interests of the welfare of the children of New Zealand, the clause forbidding enrolment of a childbefore the age of six be repealed. That in all primary, mixed, intermediate, combined technical and intermediate technical and secondary schools, where there are large numbers of adolescent girls, there shouldl be a senior mistress, with salary and status commensurate with the responsibility in the interests of the girls. _ I hat the W.T.A. press for a restoration oi Government grants to all kindergaitens controlled by recognised authorities. That the W.T.A. press for an amendment of the Education Act, so that in reorganisation of educational facilities, the status of any teacher will not be detrimentally afiected.
