CAPTURED GANGSTER
PRECAUTIONS AGAINST RESCUE. [BY CABLE—PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] CRQWN POINT (Indiana), Jan. 31. John Dillinger, the desperate gang leader who last week was captured at Tuscon, in th© State of Arizona, was safely locked up in the gaol here tonight to await his trial on a charge of slaying a policeman. Dillinger, who has been sought on charges of robbing a dozen banks and slaying three police officers, was captured on Thursday night at Tuscon after a policeman had recognised his photograph. Three other members of his band were also captured. To-day, police officers brought him here from Tucson, by aeroplane. The most elaborate precautions in the country’s criminal history were taken for fear of a possible attempt by gangsters to liberate Dillinger. When the plane landed at Chicago, one hundred and seventeen heavilyarmed police surrounded and escorted Dillinger to a waiting automobile. Then under the guard of sixty-one policemen who were armed with machine guns and pistols, and were wearing bullet-proof vests, the desperado was brought here to the gaol. Dillinger’s guard was under the following order: “If any attempt to rescue Dillinger is made, kill him immediately.” Specially detailed police and deputysheriffs with machine guns have been assigned to guard the gaol both inside and outside.
