CANADIAN TRADE
% RELATIONS WITH U.S.A. [by CABLE—PEESS ASSN. —COPYEIGHT.] OTTAWA, January 30. The Premier, Mr Bennett, stated in the House of Commons to-day that Canada would never sign a lopsided re-, ciprocity treaty with Washington that would open Canadian markets to low-er-priced farm products. Only on a basis of mutual advantage could a pact be negotiated. Replying to Liberal demands for an immediate treaty with America, he said there had been no communication from Washington recently on the subject, and as far 'as he knew there had been no change in the attitude of the United States since he had interviewed Mr Roosevelt a year ago. Dealing with Empire agreements, Mr Bennett said that, in goodwill, after protecting the interests of the Canadian dairy industry, trade pacts had been entered into with Australia and New Zealand. These had, he said, worked, satisfactorily, and were working satisfactorily, without jeopardy to the butter and the other dairy products of Canada.
In a four hour speech, Mr Bennett defended the record of his Government. He denied the reports of a pending general election, stating that the general opinion of the people was against such a course. Mr Robert Gardiner, on behalf of the .Farmer Labour Group in the House of Commons, to-night moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply to the effect: “That this House has no confidence in the Official Opposition nor in the Government.”
