WOMAN MAYOR “HIKER.”
WHEN SHE WAS GIVEN 2D. LONDON, December 12. The Mayor of Brighton, Councillor Miss Margaret Hardy, this afternoon unveiled a picture of Brighton front which the town has presented to the s.s. Brighton, one of the boats in the Newhaven-Dieppe service. The ceremony took place on the vessel in Newhaven Harbour. At a luncheon which followed, the Mayor told two amusing stories: “I think,” she said, “Newhaven must he my lucky town, and the Newhaven road must be my lucky road. [ am somewhat of a ‘hiker,’ and two seasons ago, after spending the day on the Downs, I walked down to the Newhaven road and sat down to wait for a ’bus, because my ‘hiking’ is done partly on foot and partly by ‘bus. “As I was waiting a greengrocer’s van passed, and the driver threw me an orange and a banana, saying, ‘There that’s for you, Ma!’ Almost a week to the day I sat down again at the same spot to have a rest. “I had taken my hat off and warlocking very tired and dusty. Two working men came by and had a look at me. „ “After they had passed me one ot them turned hack and put twopence in my lap and said, ‘Get yourself a cup of tea, Ma.’ I regarded those coins as sacred, and T afterwards placed them in the offertory at a civic service in Brighton Parish Church, rejoicing that there was such kindness and interest in humanity in existence.” Mi' E. J. Missenden, Docks and Marine Manager to the Southern Railway, presided at the luncheon.
