Rain in the afternoon stopped play at an interesting stage in the New Zealand tennis tournament at Wilding Park, and the quarter finals in the men’s singles event had to be postponed till next day. Sproule has taken the first set from Angas 6-3. The only surprise in the women’s singles in the morning was the defeat of the title holder, Miss Nicholls, by Miss Marjorie MacFarlane, of Auckland, in two sets. TO-DAY’S RESULTS. CHRISTCHURCH, January 4. The New Zealand tennis championships were continued to-day, in dull and threatening weather, with the men’s singles matches postponed from yesterday, as rain affected events on the programme. Results: — Men’s Singles, fourth round’: C. Sproule (N.S.W.) beat C. Angas 6/3, 6/2, 3/6, 6/2. Women’s Singles, fourth round: Miss L. Bickerton (N.S.W.) beat Miss M. Hall 6/3, 5/7, 7/5.
Combined Doubles, second round: Miss N. M. Fleming (Wairarapa) and D. C. Coombe (Wellington) beat Mrs E. Napier (Auckland) and T. W. Patterson (Christchurch) by default. Boys’ Singles, semi-final: J. N. Gunn (Auckland beat C. F. Penfold (Canterbury) 6/5, 6/1; I. J. Corich (Canterbury) beat R. J. Rossiter (Canterbury) 6/2, 6/1. Men’s Plate, second round: E. A. Rcussell beat D. F. Glanville, 5/7, 6/4, 6/4; T. Rhodes Williams beat E. Fouhy 6/2, 6/3; E. L. Bartlett beat K. W. Walton 6/4, 3/6, 6/3. Women’s Plate, first round: Miss D. E. Scott beat Miss S. Goss 8/6, 11/9.
