BYRD EXPEDITION
SUPPLY SHIP’S ARRIVAL.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
HASTINGS, January 3.
The Bear of Oakland, the American barquentine-rigged vessel, of SOO registered tons, arrived at Napier this afternoon en route to join Byrd’s expedition in the Antarctic regions. The vessel arrived direct from Papeete, the journey taking 17 days. She was to have made Wellington her first New Zealand port, but bad weather delayed her for some three days when nearing port, with the result that she ran short of coal. She sheltered for three days at Hicks Bay, on the East Coast, finally reaching Napier at 3.30 o’clock to load 100 tons of coal. When her captain, Lieutenant R. A. J. English, of the . United States Navy, found the vessel’s fuel supply running short, arrangements were made to replenish the supply. Immediately on berthing, arrangements were made to meet the ship’s requirements, and she is to leave Napier for Wellington to-morrow afternoon. She will stay at Wellington for four days, loading another 200 tons of coal, and will then proceed to Dunedin. She' will remain at that port for a. day, and will then set sail for Ross Sea to join Byrd's party. The trip from Dunedin is expected to take eight or nine days. She win remain at Ross Sea for about three weeks, and will then reutrn to Dunedin for the winter months.
