GRAIN AND,- PRODUCE. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. The week has been broken for business, du,e to the holiday. There was very little inquiry for any product.
Potatoes weakened' further during the week, the quotations to-day being £4/12/6 to £4/15/- a ton f.o.b.s.i. The nominal on truck values are £3/15/-. Reports from the North Island state that fair supplies of potatoes are still reaching Auckland from down the line, these supplementing Southern shipments sufficiently to meet the city’s needs. This prolonged production in the North is a new experience in the trade, and has made it unnecessary for merchants to secure supplies ahead. The next boat for the North is the Wingatui, due to load early next week. The oas market is very dull. Prices to farmers for A Grade Gartons are to 1/11 a bushel. Chaff is worth about £2 on trucks. BELL HILL SLUICING CO. The Bell Hill Gold Sluicing Company has received advice from the mine manager that work is proceeding at the claim satisfactorily. Owing to the wet weather experienced the manager has taken full advantage to push back the top face. This has been assisted by a considerable fall of top earth. When this has been cleared, which will take a few days, it will facilitate more advantageous working of the better ground on the lower face for some considerable time. The manager expresses the opinion that there is no cause to doubt the richness of the claim.
KOTUKU OIL AND GOLDFIELDS. The Manager reports that everything is going satisfactorily on the Kotuku oil fields. Most of the machinery has now been installed, including engineering and blacksmith’s workshops for the purpose of doing repair work and including the reconstruction of the drills. The installation of the boiler is nearing completion, and before long the machinery will have its trial run. thus making sure that everything is in readiness. As soon as the large coil of special drilling cable arrives from England, work will be commenced in real earnest. The bore No. 1, Kotuku, Oil and Goldfields Ltd., has been commenced, and is down 16 feet. This hole has the ISin. casing inserted, and it will be set in position, then concreted in, thus preventing any side play; also to assist as a guide for the purpose of keeping the bore straight during drilling operations. The plant, is one of the best ever fitted tip on the field, and the company has every prospect of reaching the oil zone in a few mouths, after drilling operations have commenced.
