The Gaiety Orchestra is supplying th© music and the floor will be in excellent order. A dainty supper has been arranged by an energetic committee. THE COMPETITIONS The annual Festival of the West Coast Competitions Society will open on Wednesday, August 16, at 9.30 a.m. and will continue daily with sessions at 9.30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7.15 p.m. till Wednesday, 23rd, on which evening the first Prize Winners’ Demonstration will be held. The second Demonstration will be held on the night following, when the presentation of cups and trophies will take place. The entries for* this year’s Festival set a new record including the best vocal music entry to date, in addition to the elocutionary, oratory, instrumental and dancing sections, which are always well supported. As the standard right through has risen each year steadily, competition becomes more difficult and interesting, and the presence of competitors from Christchurch, Hokitika and Westport will act as an additional “draw” to the public. The judges appointed come with high credentials. Mr. Sidney Williamson (Christchurch) adjudicated on two previous occasions and proved himself not only a judge of high musical ability but one willing to assist candidates with most useful advice and criticism. Mr. J. R. Lester (Christchurch), comes as a strangei’ in a judicial capacity but strongly recommended by previous elocutionary judges at Greymouth. Both as a teacher and competitor, Mr. Lester is known by repute to a large number of those who will appear before him during next week, and concerning whom he expresses the desire to be helpful to the competitors and to the individual competitors. Miss Triggs (Timaru) has experience in and good testimonials for judicial capacity and is visiting the West Coast for the first time. Mr. W. Meldrum, S.M., who will judge the oratory sections, has rendered valuable service in the oratorical classes, which have built up solidly as the result of his many good counsels to competitors. In order that patrons may leave the Town Hall not later than 10.30 o’clock each evening, it has been decided to commence the evening sessions at 7.15 o’clock, and to strictly limit recalls from day sessions to two for each class. The entry is such that varied high class also interesting programmes will be presented at all three daily sessions, particularly at the evening session.

1 The annual competition between the Clubs’ senior and junior teams will be carried on throughout the Festival. The senior issue xVill be between Trinity (the holders), St. Columba, and United, and the junior teams opposing one another will be Trinity (the holders), and St. Columba. The contests have continued annually since the inception of the Society in 1927, and they have been marked by a spirit of friendly rivalry unparalleled in competition history which has won the plaudits of visiting competitors and has been extolled by the numerous adjudicators, as a feature peculiar to the West Coast Competitions Society. Honorary members’ season tickets covering admission to all sessions can be purchased at the Bristol Piano Company, and at all stationers.
