UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

WELLINGTON’S STATION. [per press association.] WELLINGTON, July 2. Work on the layout of the new Wellington railway station yard will commence to-morrow, when 20 men will be engaged. The number of men will be increased daily, and 150 men will be placed by the middle of next week. Such an early start has been made possibly by the decision of the Minister of Employment, and the Railways Department. Standard rates of pay will obtain on the job. The labour will be furnished through the Labour Bureau.

20 MILLIONS LOAN SCHEME. DUNEDIN, July 3. A large deputation representing suburban and country, as well as city bodies, -urged the Minister of Employment that the allocation in country and suburbs should equal that for the citv. It was pointed out. that the present policy was driving men to the cities. . . One suggestion was that the Government, to enable full allocation, should borrow 20 million sterling, spending it in two years, repaying through annual unemployment, fund, now at four million. The Minister in promising consideration stated that the abolition of the stand-down week, which was the crux of the position, was against the Board’s policy, as being outside the funds at its disposal.
