MEETINGS TO COME. April 15, 17 —-Beaumont and Tuapeka Combined. April 15. —Hawke’s Bay J.C. April 15, 17. —Fielding J.C. April 15, 17 —Wairarapa R.C. April 15, 17.—Auckland R.C. April 15, 17, 18. —Riverton R.C. April 17. —Waipukurau J.C. April 17. —Kumara R.C. April 17, 18- —Canterbury J.C. April 19.—Westland R.C. April 21, 22.—Greymouth J.C. April 22—Hawke’s Bay J.C. April 22, 24. —Avondale J.C. April 26.—Reefton J.C. April 26—Marton J.C. April 29.—Franklin R.C. For Feilding: Takakua, who is engaged both at Feilding and Wairarapa next weekend, will race at Feilding and will be ridden by A. Jenkins. Caliamart May Win: C. Thompson will be Caliamart s pilot in the Mangere Steeplechase, at the Auckland Easter meeting. Caliamart is fairly forward, and may win. He went north yesterday in company with Senegal. . , Disappointed: I Arrowmid ran disappointing races at Westport. She had every chance, but was not good enough. She will never reach good company, for she lacks size, and stamina. J. Walshe had her in grand order, in fact as good as he is likely to get her. Should Win Soon: A horse that pleased both in looks, and style of galloping at Westport, was Nocturnus. He is a big gelding, a three-year-old by Night Raid out of Victory Lass, and for a novice shaped promisingly. In the Trial Stakes at Kumara, Nocturnus can be expected to go a good race. Knocklong’s Sister: Knockbain, a three-year-old sister to Knocklong, will be given a race at Kumara. She has been working at Omoto, and shaping nicely, but will require experience before confidence can be placed in her ability. Knockbain is small, but solidly built.

Hampden: Was carrying plenty of condition at Westport., but yan surprisingly well. He will be an improved horse at Kumara, and as he is trained there, he will know the way round. A stake should be earned by him, before the circuit concludes.

Royal Sceptre: Ran such a poor race at Westport on Saturday, that the public were prepared to take chances about him improving for Monday. He went, out at a long price on both machines, to contest the Grandstand Handicap, but did not commence well, and was never in a prominent position. He will have to improve to have a chance at Kumara. Little Wonder:

After a smart beginning at Westport, could not foot it with Awamutu and Projection, who were together out in front, and drifted back in the straight. Little Wonder bears a bright coat, and if allowed to find her feet, and not hurried as at Westport, she will pay the expenses of her Coast racing. Well Placed: Silver Sight has a very light impost in the Dillman’s Handicap at Kumara. If at all useful, Mr A. Bebau’s recent purchase should make his presence felt in this race. Dainty Ways: Is a regular visitor to Omoto, and is well forward in condition. She will be given a race at Kumara, but will probably be much in need of it, and could not be regarded as holding good prospects. Later Coast meetings will suit her chances much better. Don Jose: Never looked likely in the Westport Cup, and the promise he showed by his recent win on the East Coast, was quickly shattered. Don Jose prefers to run as he thinks best, and no amount of urging will make him do his best. He has to be taken on trust, and therefore ig not a good horse to follow;

NOTES FROM RICCARTON. RED HECKLE AMISS. [special to “stab.”] CHRISTCHURCH, April 11. Hard tracks and fast times again prevailed for track operations at Riccarton to-day, galloping being confined to the plough and the No. 6 grass track. On the Plough: Silk Arrow, the first to work, ran five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, and Sweet Arrow beat Nightly in similar time. Fracas sprinted three furlongs in 36, and later True Shaft repeated the performance. It has not yet been decided whether the latter will start in the Great Easter Handicap or Sockburn Handicap on Monday. Princess Argosy showed good form by reeling off six furlongs in 1.15 3-5, the last three in 37 3-5. Heather Golw strode over six furlongs in 1.19, and Silent Flight sprinted three furlongs in 37 3-5. Cricket Bat displayed his usual brilliancy by recording 1.2 for five furlongs, the last three in 37 1-5. Rebel Song was held under restraint in galloping a mile in 1.46 3-5. Rocket, and Zeebrugge were companions over six furlongs, run in 1.16 3-5, the first, half in 51. The latter finished a length in front, but Rocket, was not ridden right out. Shatter, with Imperial Spear for a mate, covered six furlongs in 1.16 4-5, the first half in 50 1-5. Shatter was two lengths behind over the first half of the journey, but was finishing on with more than a length to 1 spare. Gay Crest and Tout le Monde finished together at the end of five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, the first three in 39. Cranford registered similar time, the last three in 39 3-5. St. Joan sprinted three furlongs in 37 2-5. Tea Garden strode over seven, furlongs in 1.33, the first half in 53. He should do well in the high-weight events next week. Water Polo beat Elude over six furlongs in 1.17 2-5. A rider is required for the latter in Monday’s engagement. Ramo and Royal Love were restricted to a working gallop over a mile, taking 1.46 3-5. ; Great Star and Grand Review were

eacfi given long work, with two fur-i long sprints home. Both look very j well. Chief Light strode over seven furlongs in 1.35, and Spoon ran the same distance in 1-34. Fleeting Glance covered six furlongs in 1.17, and Niggerhead followed in 1.18. Aladdin and Importance reeled off five furlongs in 1.6 1-5. The former continues to stand up to his work well. Metal Bird and Wise Choice finished together after covering six furlongs in 1.18 1-5, the last three in 39 3-5. Gaysome easily accounted for Goldstead over five furlongs in 1.4 2-5. On the Grass: Guarantee and Cleaver ran five furlongs in 1-4, the latter finishing in front. Sweet Agnes and Errantry executed a similar task in 1.2 3-5, the last three in 38 1-5, the former finishing the better. Concentrate and Martian Chief were not ridden out in recording 1.18 2-5 for six furlongs, the last three in 39. Gustavo and Ranelagh were abreast throughout a six.furlong task executed in 1.16, They ran the first three furlongs in 36 3-5, and half mile in 49 4-5. Hurlingham and Rothen reeled off a smart five furlongs in 1.2 1-5, finishing together. Polydora had a half length advantage from Rational 11. at the end of six furlongs in 1.17, the last three in 39. A similar gallop was credited to Jaloux and Lucky Dive in 1.17 3-5. Eupator and Nightguard had a close tussle over the final stages of a six furlong gallop,, taking 1.16, the last three in 39secs. Jeremy and Sundancer sprinted three furlongs in 37secs. Golden Dart and Robin Hood covered six furlongs in 1.16 4-5, the former making the better showing.

Red Heckle in Trouble: The first casualty amongst the important candidates for the Easter, programme at Riccarton is Red Heckle, who has fallen a victim to the effects of galloping on hard ground. One of his front legs filled after his gallop over a mile on Saturday, and it was thought inadvisable to go on with him while the present track conditions continued. It is practically certain therefore that he will be an absentee from next week’s meeting. Riders for Great Easter: Some of the riding engagements for the Great Eatser Handicap are as follows:—Cricket Bat, A. E. Ellis; Gay Crest, G. Humphries; Great Star, R. Coveny; Ruling Light, F. J. McKay; Irish Lancer, J. Dooley; Merry Peel, L. J. Ellis; Assemble, R. Mackie; Martian Chief, S. Wilson; True Shaft, E. Ludlow; Gustavo, J. W. Jennings; Ranelagh, C. Eastwood; Rebel Song, A. Eastwood.
