FIRE OUTBREAKS

TEA-ROOMS DESTROYED

CHRISTCHURCH, June 17

The Maori Tea-rooms, at New Brighton, were totally destroyed by fire at one o’clock this morning. The establishment consisted of a tea-room, confectioner’s shop, and four living rooms, and was owned by Mr H- McCormack, of Christchurch, and was leased to Mrs M. East, and carried on by Mrs Ward. The cause of the lire is unknown. The building was insured for £7OO in the Guardian Office, and the contents for £1250 in the National Office.

DAIRYMAN’S LOSS

PAHIATUA, June 16.

A big milking shed with contents, including the milking plant, an electric motor and forty tons of hay, belonging to Ernest S. Holdaway, at Ballance, was destroyed by fire late on Saturday night. The insurance was £7BO in the State Office.

HOUSE DESTROYED

NELSON, June 16

A nine-roomed two-storey wooden dwelling at Atawhai, owned by Mr. C. Royds, of Takaka, and occupied by Mr. H. F. McClure, headmaster of the Nelson Central School, was totally destroyed by fire last night.

SAVED BY’ DOG.

ASHBURTON. June 18.

A five-roomed house, owned and occupied by AV. D. Plunkett, was destroyed with contents, by fire this morning. Plunkett was awakened by a neighbour’s dog barking. The place was then blazing, and he had difficulty in rescuing a child from a back room. The insurance was £5OO on the house (New Zealand) and none on the furniture.

CONFECTIONER’S STORE.

BLENHEIM, June 18

The confectionery premises occupied by Cokei' and Mills were partially destroyed by lire this morning. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The fire started in a small storeroom in the middle of the building. The brigade confined the greater part of the damage to this portion, though practically all the stock was ruined by heat, smoke and water. The contents were insured for about £7OO (North British and Mercantile). The premises are owned by the Murray Estate and insured for £llOO (Sun).
