ENGINEERS’ AWARD

arbitration court hearing.

[PEP. PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

CHRISTCHURCH, June 18.

A big Dominion dispute that came before the Arbitration Court to-day .•was listened to by many witnesses and others interested in engineering and allied trades. The employers in the engineering trade asked that the toward be amended-in various directions. One suggested a new clause covering the employment of women. At the outset, for the unions, Mr R. J, Barter objected to any review of the award whatever. He said that the Court had no jurisdiction to amend an award, unless the unions consented to the review. Mr T. O. Bishop, for the employers, told the Court that it had full power to deal with the application, under the Arbitration Act, and the employers were within their rights in coming before the Court. The Court retired, and later Judge Fraser said the Court had power to amend, under .special conditions laid down when the present award was made. The objection of the Unions therefore was not sustained. The hearing is proceeding.
