OBITUARY
MR ROBERT HANNAH.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, June 14. The death has occurred of Robert Hannah, of R. Hannah and Co., boot manufacturers. The late Mr Hannah was born in Ireland on September 20, 1846, and was apprenticed to a bootmaker in Kilrea. At the age of 18 he went to Queensland, but two years later, in 1866, came to New Zealand, settling at Hokitika. It was in 1870 that the firm of R. Hannah and Co. was founded at Charleston, then a prosperous mining town. In 1874, the late Mr Hannah transferred his business to Wellington, taking as partner Mr Martin Lightband. The business quickly expanded, and branches were eventually opened all over New Zealand. Mr Lightband’s partnership was withdrawn in 1889. The late proprietor of Hannah and Co. retained his interest in the welfare of the West Coast, and recognised its great future by opening a branch in Greymouth, which has since been greatly enlarged. The late Mr Hannah had been ill for eighteen months before his death. His wife predeceased him two- years ago. He leaves a family of three sons —James, Robert (London) and George, and three daughters, Mrs Wiggins, Mrs Johnston, and Mrs Liddle. Mr James Hannah is at present Visiting Sydney.
