UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

MARRIED WOMEN CRITICISED. (Per' Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 8. In view of the unsatisfactory state of the labour market, not only in Auckland, but throughout the Dominion, united efforts are to be made to have an investigation made into the circumstances of married women occupying city positions, while their husbands are also earning good salaries. Appeals have been directed to the Auckland Employers’ Association by the Auckland Women’s branch of the New Zealand Labour Party and the Auckland Unemployment Committee. At a meeting of the former organisation yesterday, members of the executive attributed the encroachment of married women on the employment market to selfishness, resultant from the effects of the war, and to women continuing to hold men’s positions following the cessation of hostilities. It was complained that while some fac- '■ tory girls were on the border of starvation, married women had occupied positions for ten and twelve years, when the need for them doing so did not exist. A resolution was passed affirming the principle of writing to the Employers’ Association, drawing its attention to the situation and asking that an investigation be made into the circumstances of married women applicants for positions, and of those already holding positions. A deputation will wait upon the Association, and it is intended to bring pressure to bear to have the whole question threshed out. RIOT AT DUBLIN. LONDON, November 7. An attempt by Dublin unemployed to rush the gates of the Free State Parliament House while the Dail Eireann was in session, resulted in a riot. The police were stoned, but they dispersed the crowd by a baton charge.
