RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.)

Mr Gordon Manderson was an outward passenger by yesterday’s express.

Mr and Mrs J. Douglas will return to-morrow (Saturday) from Oamaru. The prize winners at the library euchre tournament, were as follow: Mrs McCracken I; Wm. Glen 2; J. Garvey 3.

The continued dry spell of weather is having a great effect here. Most of the inhabitants have to carry all their water from some of the local creeks. The swimming carnival will take place on Sunday. An attractive programme is arranged and a few exciting finishes are expected. The committee intend extending the baths from 25 yards to 33 1-3 yards and they need finance, therefore it is expected that there will be a record crowd. There is now accommodation for 650 spectators. The flume at Briandale Colliery has been very successful and work is going on very steadily. A number of new men started last week and a new drive is being opened out under the guidance of Mr Christopher (manager) and is expected to produce coal and give employment for more men this week. The management expect to see this mine producing 150 tons per day. The McTaggart Esplanade will again be the scene of an active band of willing workers on Sunday when it is expected that between forty and fifty workers will put in their appearance to finish the work on hand which is to prepare for the planting of trees and shrubs, levelling for the parking place and removing noxious weeds. Cars leave Runanga at 10 a.m. and as many as can come are requested to bring a pick or shovel. Runanga Soccerites are expecting a visit, from the new club being raised in Greymouth to plaV a. friendly match in the near future.
