COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING

REEFTON, March 22
A meeting o£ the Inangahua. County Council was held to-day. Present: Crs T. R. Watson (Chairman), Paine, Clayton, Blackadder, Byrne, Auld, O’Regan. The Secretary. Wealth of Nations Mine, Ltd., applied to treat as irrecoverable the balance of rates due on the company’s property. —yßates to be treated as irrecoverable. Reeves and Morgan, for Wealth of Nations Mine, Ltd., asked that rent on the company’s property be treated as irrecoverable.—Recommended be treat ed as irrecoverable. The Secretary, Fire Brigade forwarded statement, of expenses incurred in connection with recent fires.—Persons outside Fire Brigade area be asked to contribute. John Foster advised that he had no further use for gravel reserve at Waimaunga, and that he desired to transfer same to A. D. Marsden. —Mr Marsden. be asked to reply to above letter etc.
The Medical Office of Health wrote re administration of Regulations by Local Authorities.—Council to adopt regulations under Health Act. The County Solicitor wrote re the demolition of building in Broadway, and from Medical Officer of Health on same matter. —Demolition order to be served, on owner to become effective within 21 days of date of order. The District Traffic Manager,' N.Z. Railways re daily service to Inangahua Junction, wrote that the traffic would not be sufficient to warrant the running of trains daily. Re trucking yards at Cronadun Railway Station advising t hat the traffic as yet does not warrant the expense of erecting stock yards arthat station, also advising (1) that arrangements have been made to have the yards at Inangahua Junction Station dressed with fine shingle or cinders; (2) the Department has no water service at this station and is unable to provide water for a drinking trough. The Progress Mines of New Zealand applied for a reduction in rent to 2/6 per acre for a period of one year from January 1, 1928, with respect to the Company’s special claims. —Reduction in rent be recommended. The New Big River Gold Mining Company Ltd., applied for reduction in rent to 1/- per acre per annum from January 1, 1928 to December 31, 1928, over special claims 1199, 2186 and 3324.—That it bo a recommendation to the Warden to reduce rent to 2/per acre.
The Mines Department forwarded authority £1 for £1 for track Stevenson’s Flat to Alexander River. The Public Works Department wrote handing over to the Council the control of Inangahua River Suspension bridge at Rotokohu (Beyer’s Bridge).
Jas. Bell wrote drawing attention to the danger of erosion at Beyer’s bridge.—Copy of Mr Bell’s letter to be sent to Public Works Department. The Minister of Public Works wrote re the Licensing of Drivers of Motor Vehicles.-—Mr Walter Boden be appointed Vehicles and Traffic Inspector under Motor Vehicles Act, 1924. The Medical Officer of Health wrote re annual inspection of hotels in Buller Licensing District. —Copy' of requisition be sent to owners of premises about which complaint is made.
W. C. Harvey, Oweka wrote asking Council to approach Government for aid to construct a bridge across Brown Creek. —Decided that the Government be asked for a grant of £5OO for the work.
The report of the Engineer and Mining Valuer were submitted showing a decrease of £4OO in rateable value on last year’s totals. The reports of the Sexton and Vehicle Inspector, and Inspector of Nuisances were read and received. It was resolved that a maintenance grant of £4OO for Waiuta Blackwater road be applied'for on a £1 for £1 basis and that tenders be called for the supply and delivery of 400 yards of metal for Blackwater road to close on March 31. The following resolutions were carried: —
That a further application be made to the Government to have the maintenance control of the Main Highways in the County handed back to the County Council, and Messrs R. P. Hudson, and H. E. Holland ,M.P., be written to on the matter. That the Engineer supply details every month in the Engineer’s report as to where men are employed. That before Beyer’s Bridge is taken over by the Council that the Engineer and Mi 1 Mathieson together with the County Chairman inspect the locality with respect to the present erosion taking place at the bridge. That the Railway Department bo notified that there is sufficient water at the Bluff that could be carried into the Inangahua Junction Railway Station at little cost. That the sawmillers be asked to supply particulars of timber cut as formerly requested. That Phelan’s Bridge at Snowy Creek be put in repair. That the Railway Department be asked to construct drafting yards for sheep at Reefton Railway Station. That the Postal Department. be asked to supply a triweekly service from Ikamatua to Christchurch. That tenders bo called for supply and delivery of 200 loads of gravel on the Maruia Road. The notice of motion tabled that Mr J. Williams be paid rhe sum of £6 for fencing graves at Fern Flat, was duly carried. That in future all contracts let boar the signature of the "Engineer and contracting party and the signatures be witnessed by the County Clerk or representative of the Ridings affected. That a letter of appreciation be sent to Mr E. W. Spencer. Inangahua Director of Blackwater Mines for his valuable help in supplementing the water supply. HOSPITAL BOARD.
. The monthly meeting of the Inangahua Hospital Board took place this evening. Present: Messrs J. B. Auld (Chairman), J. O’Byrne, F. Seawright, W. Blackadder, G. B. Mclnroe, E. 1. Paine, T. R. Watson. The Grey Hospital Board forwarded the report of the conference between the West Coast Hospital Boards and
Timber Workers’ Union. Mr Paine moved that this Board fall into agreement with the other Boards. Seconded by Mr Paine and carried. A vote of thanks was recorded to Messrs Soawright and Nevin for attending tnc meeting. Grey Valley Farmers’ Union wrote asking for a copy of the. Board’s balance sheet.-—Resolved Io reply that the- balance-sheet can be perused at the Secretary’s office.
The Department of Health, forwarded form for proposed capital expenditure for the year 1928-29. The Secretary stated the only capital expenditure for the year was (he proposed maternity ward. Mr Seawright moved (hat the estimated capital levy be approved and forwarded to the Department.—Carried. The Department of Health wrote re
maternity ward stating that the Direc-tor-General was at present absent from Wellington and on his return the Board’s letter will be placed before him. The Chairman said the Medical Superintendent had approved of the plans with slight alterations. Reefton. —The Medical Superintendent reported:—Admitted 13, discharged 17, died 1, remaining in hospital 30, operations 5, anaesthetics 5, out-pa-tients 2, attendances on out-patients 20.
Waiuta.—The Matron, Waiuta Hospital reported: Admitted 2, discharged 1, remaining 1, No of out-patients 55, attendances 106.
The reports were received. Tenders—The following tenders were received for painting and papering: Waiuta Hospital: George Green, £7O; D. A. Wright £B3 10/-. Mr G. Green’s tender was accepted, and Mr J. McEwan was appointed supervisor of the work.
