NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to "Star.”)

ASHBURTON, January 14. Racing opened at the Ashburton meeting with the High Weight Handicap. Four acceptors lined up, Oriflamb being a hot favourite with a good deal more than half the machine invested on him. Rhondda led Oriflamb from the barrier with Carnot next, while Purple Plume quickly dropped to the rear. They ran like this to the straight where Rhondda dropped back. Carnot then moved up, but he never looked like catching Oriflamb, who won by more than a length. Rhondda hung on well and was only a length further back, with Purple Plume a hundred yards in the rear. The winner has just returned from a successful campaign on the West Coast, where he won two hurdles races and a flat race during the holidays. Carnot was looking much better than when he raced at South Canterbury and put up a fair performance, but he is never likely to come back to his best form. The Tinwald Handicap, the principal event of the meeting, dflew a disappointing field of four. Sir Roy was a pronounced favourite, carrying nearly twice as much money as Ophir, who was easily second choice. Margaret Birney, as usual, set out to make all her own running. At the mile post she was two lengths in front of her three opponents. A little further on Ophir dropped back a couple of lengths, but at’ the half-mile post, Margaret Birney, Moratorium, Sir Roy and Ophir were in single file without any daylight. On reaching the straight, Sir Roy ran to the front, with Ophir in close attendance. There seemed a possibility of an interesting struggle between the pair, but a furlong from the post it was apparent that Sir Roy had his rival’s measure and he eventually won very easily by a length. The other pair were a length and a-half behind Ophir, Moratorium beating Margaret Birney by a head. Sir Roy Avon so easily that further successes may be looked for . very soon.

WAIRIO J.C. INVERCARGILL, January 15. The annual meeting of the Wairio J.C. was held yesterday in beautiful weather, with a large attendance. The track was in good order. Jan. 26, 28—Forbury Park T.C. Jan. 28—Hawke’s Bay T.C.

Jan. 31, Feb. I.—Nelson T.C. GALLOPING. The Ashburton track is a particularly fast one-when in good order, and several good times have been recorded by horses, who have never * been able to do better on other tracks. Recently, Daphne de Oro put up 4.30 4-5 off a 4.38 mark. Sir Roy, in winning the Tinwald Handicap on Saturday, of 11 miles, did so in the fast time of 2.6 1-5, which is one of the best performances of the season over the distance. The grass track at Reef ton is also very fast, and many horses there have been privately clocked to put up excellent times. On account of her consistent running at Awapuni there are many who expect Oratrix to go a great race in the Wellington Cup. She has certainly been staying on at the end of her races and, being by Kilbroney from Oratress, she has plenty of staying blood in her veins. Her dam deadheated with Kilmoon in the same race in 1920. In addition to a double fracture, F. C. Porter’s leg wap badl|y crushed when Count Cavour suffered his un forunate accident at Auckland, and the Riccarton horseman is likely to be an inmate of the Auckland hospital for some weeks. That Epistle is none the worse for her strenuous holiday campaign she showed at Hastings on Tuesday. Raced at Gisborne, Feilding, Woodville, Manawatu -(three days), and Hastings, she is now as fresh as paint to go on and tackle Foxton, where, with 8.13, she will take some heading off. At none of the above meetings did she fail to gain place money, while she won three and a half races. On T' day morning, without any trouble, she ran half a mile in 501 sec. “All’s well that ends well” on the racecourse, as well as in other places. An incident, however, which occurred before the running of the Invercargill Cup ended well enough up to a point — but up to a point only. A punter had been given £5O by another punter to put on Countersign in this race, and duly obtained the tickets from the totalisator. Conversing about his investment shortly after with a friend, he made the startling discovery that he had put his money on Nincompoop. A hurried visit was paid to the totalisator peapie, and they agreed to do their best to dispose of the tickets on Countersign, before the machine closed. The exchange was made to the full amount in the time at the disposal of the totalisator people, and everything so far had ended well. It only remains to be added that Countersign

ran nowhere and that Nincompoop finished second to Set Sail, and paid a handsome dividend. TROTTING. After a short let-up, several horses who raced- during the Xmas circuit were given easy work over the week end. They included Vai Logan, Kawana, Sedmere and Royal Review. D. Morgan’s Logan Pointer-Little Rose mare was given one round at a fast clip. She looks very well. F. Gilbert gave the trotter by Woodland Whispers-Cobra several rounds at a good clip. The mare is in nice order for a preparation. , Meritor is having a spell in the hope of freshening him up. He went off colour during the Xmas circuit. Evidently the recent racing was quite sufficient for local owners mid trainers. No local horses have been nominated for the Nelson T.C. meeting at the end of this month. Velocity, who was returned to his owner m Nelson, after the Greymouth Spring Meeting, figures among the nominations ; also other Coast horses in Peter Wilkin, Wineberry, Rothmoor, and Molly Audubon. Gold Rush, a promising Great Audubon pacer and a winner nt Reefton, will take part at the meeting.
