His condition remains unchanged and serious. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. ’“ WELLINGTON; Noy. 29. The condition of the man Windbefg, who cut his throat and slashed his thighs with a razor, has shown a slight improvement to-day. There is a chance that he will live. CANTERBURY ANNIVERSARY CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 30. Celebrations' to mark the seventyfifth anniversary of' the hounding of Canterbury are to be held here from December 12 to 16, beginning with a complimentary luncheon to pioneers and an historical pageant. INCOME TAX RETURNS. HAMILTON, November 27. A fine of. £lO was imposed on John Falloon, a boarding-house keeper, of Rotorua, for neglecting to furnish in-come-tax returns. Defendant relied on the Department for a number of years to make default, assessments, which he accepted. DOCTOR FINED. HAMILTON, November 27. For .'failing, to notify-cases of puerperal septicaemia, Douglas Marton, medical practitioner,’ of Ngaruawahia, was fined l £lO and costs £3 10s.- He had previously been fined for a similar offence. MOTORIST ACQUITTED. NELSON, November 27. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty in both charges againt Leonard William Field (1) manslaughter, ' (2) causing the death of Lyndia Effie •Hunter by negligently driving. The c&ses arose out of. a fatal motor accident on Waimea Road on September 27 last. FRUITERER ROBBED. ASHBURTON, . November 30. The thief 'entered the home of C. Hulton, fruiterer, pnd stole £l9 from a bag containing the day’s takings, which had been left on the kitchen table- the day • before. Access was obtained through a casement window nearby. FIRE AT CHRISTCHURCH, CHRISTCHURCH', Nov. 30. Roused from sleep by a passerny, shortly after two o’clock this morning, J. H. Forward escaped in night attire from his burning shop and dwelling in Stanmore Road. The whole place was virtually gutted. The cause of the fire is unexplained. ' A LABOUR DEMAND. AUCKLAND, November 30. A meeting of the Labour Party on Sunday passed a resolution, without a dissentient voice, demanding the immediate release of Oswald Bourbeau and Evan John Thomas, imprisoned for being in possession of seditious literature ; also the ninety-nine seamen now in Auckland gaol. BABY’S DEATH. TAIHAPE, November 27. ! At the Magistrate's Court a young single woman, a recent arrival from Ireland, was charged with man-slaugh-ter and the concealment of birth of a new-born male child, the body of which was found in a trunk in the girl’s room at a home where she worked at Mangaweka. Accused pleaded not guilty, and>was committed for trial on both charges, bail being allowed in her’ own recognisances, • and one surety of £lOO, which was forthcoming.
