Rose, the ■ long-distance champion, made an unsuccessful attemipt to break the three-mile Australasian record, established on .the local ground . at- the championship meeting last season., His time for., the distance was 15 mins. 5 3-5 ®ecs., or 2 3-ssecs. short of the record. A strong westerly wind that swept the ground 'militated against fast times, while, in addition to this, there .was not a competitor capable of extending Rose, and' he had to finish the last three quarters of .a mile without being paced. He sprinted over the last forty yards, and, finished l comparatively fresh. amidst the plaudits of a large crowd of .spectators. MAKURA CROQUET CLUB. The Makura Croquet Club opened its season on Saturday afternoon. Although the weather conditions were unfavourable there was an excellent attendance of membeys and' their friends. Mrs D. Tennent (club captain) wel-> cpmed the visitors and formally declared the season opened. A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed and was greatly appreciated by all. The <lolf Croquet Competition, in which keen interest was taken, was won by Matron' Nurse. During the afternoon a stall containing fancy goods was presided over by Mesdames Smythe and Allison. The winners of the various articles competed for on this stall were Mesdames Olliver, Phillips and Miss Pratt. The club lawns are in splendid order and. presented a charming, -picture with the profusion of rambler roses growing all around. A featur eof great improvement in the club’s grounds this ■season is the artistic and ornamental gate sign presented to the club by Mrs Allan Smith. A number of matches have been arranged for early in the season, and players are requested to get into practice as soon as possible. The first match of the season will be drawn this week, and posted in the club’s pavilion. TENNIS Owing to the unfavourable weather on Saturday, the combined doubles set downifor play at the Grey Courts were further postponed. On Saturday next the Grey A. team will play a match against Hokitika, at Hokitika, and the Grey B. team will meet a team from Hokitika; in Greymouth. GREY RIFLE CLUB. The Grey Defence Rifle Club opened its season on Wednesday last. The President, Mr T- E, Stent, fired the first shot, securing a bull, and in declaring the season opened, hoped the standard of shooting would reveal high marksmanship, and that the new members would figure among the winners of .the various trophies to be shot for during the season. The first shoot for the Beafh trophy, which is to be a three-weekly competition, of seven shots, at three, five, and six hundred yards ,took place during the afternoon.
