NEW YORK, September 13. In the Davis Cup final singles, Richards defeated Patterson, 6/3, 7/5, 6/4. Tilden defeated Wood, 6/2, 6/1, 6/1. The matches were favoured with summery weather. In the first set, O’Hara Wood broke through Tilden’s service in the first game. Tilden returned the compliment -on O’Hana Wood’s .service. Thereafter, the American, stripping off his sweater, rolled up points with comparative ease. He raced through the other two sets, playing a deep court game, without any effort at killing strokes, and he kept O’Hara Wood running across the court.
Patterson won his first service in the second game. Richards then took the Qepd, a*rid held .'coigtrcjl until the eighth game. when the Australian broke Richards’ .service, and took his own, his slashing first ball being almost unplayable. Richards then reeled off the set on his own service.
Patterson made a brave effort in the tion matches among themselves. They third set to turn the tide, but Richards, coming to mid-court, kept pounding his backhand. The Australian netted drives. He took on full volley at midcourt, and could not save the game. Upon the completion of the challenge round, Patterson announced that the teain would proceed homeward via Chicago, Winnipeg and other centres, where they will play exhibition matches among themselves. Tthey are embarking on the Sonoma on October 7. INTER-’VARSITY MATCH. MELBOURNE, September 18. At tennis Victoria beat Stanford University team by 132 games to 109. “AN ENGLISH LENGLEN.”
— LONDON, September 14. Betty Nuthall, aged thirteen, became the girl junior lawn tennis champion of Great Britain, defeating Miss Dearman, four years older, by 4/6, 6/4, 6/1. Betty’s severity of stroke and clever tactical style were wonderful. It is hoped that she may become an English Lenglen.
