MATTEOTTI AVENGED

PROMINENT FACIST SHOT,

MURDER IN TRAM-CAR.

(Australian and N ± Z Cable Association.,

ROME, Sept, 12. A workman named Corvi, fired three shots with a revolver at a tramcar, fatally wounding Deputy Casalini, Under Secretary to the Fascist Corporation. The whole of Italy is horror stricken at the crime, which has still further increased the tension of the nation’s nerves. Corvi is a carpenter. He was formerly a porter at Signor Casalini’s villa. Signor Casalini was wounded in the forehead, and in the temple. He sank into a seat in the tram car, against his Jourteen-year-old daughter, murmuring, “They have killed me.” ’ Corvi threatened th e conductor and passengers with the revolver. Then he tried to escape, but was caught by passing carabineers and soldiers, who had difficulty in protecting him from the crowd, who threatened to lynch him.

Corvi appeared to be unbalanced, and bordering on insanity. He said that he had killed Casalini in order to avenge his brother in idealism, Matteotti.

Signor Casalini was taken to the hospital, but he expired when on the operating table. Cabinet is now taking measures to ensure public order. The whole press and Directory of the Fascist Party are exhorting the nation to exercise restraint.

The poet, Deputy Benelli, Leader of the New Italic League, has published an impassioned appeal to the whole nation to lay down arms and end the martyrdom, .terror and threats which are stifling the nation’s civilisation'. 1

Signor Casalini was a popular member of the Fascist Party. He leaves a widow and five children.

FRENCH COUNT’S DEATH.

CONSPIRACY ALLEGED.

PARIS, Sept. 13.

The death of Compte Roger Leroux De Kirminon a fortnight ago at Lannion, in Brittany, which seemed a simple affair, has developed into an extraordinary mystery. The Compte was found with revolver wounds. He died, and was buried in his family vault. The wounds were announced to have been the result of an accident.

The Comptesse, who has since been accused, now declares that the Compte’s typiste, Mdmlle. Nedelic, conspired to secure the Compte’s death with two cousins of the victim, in order to obtain liis inheritance. _ Under examination yesterday, the Comptesse maintained her innocence, although the judge pointed out that, while the Compte might have inflicted one wound on himself, he could not have been responsible for the four.
