. «O—CANTERBURY BOARD. The Canterbury Education Board met on Friday. Present: Messrs G. AV. Armitage (chairman), AV. A. Banks, AV. H. AVindsor, E. H. Andrews, C. S. Thompson, A. Peveri.il, A’f. I*. Spencer, T. Hughes, J. G. Gow, T. Maze, It. Wild, and H. J. Bignell. The Appointments Committee recommended the following appointment: - Kuinara Junction: Miss I. M. Heissenbuttel, sole teacher. The following resignations were received -.—Okarito : Miss A. V. Thomson, sole teacher. Organising teacher (AVest Coast): Air It. AV. Alaxwell. The Committee reported that it had been agreed to inform the Department that the Board proposes to advertise the position of organising teacher for the West Coast, for which it desired the Department’s approval. The following were appointed commissioners to act in their several school districts :—Arthur’s Pass, Air T. Kelly ; Glen Kowai, Air S. Andrew; Humphreys, Air AV. Adams; Jackson, Air J. Aleyer; Kumara, Alessrs R. Bell and C. Burrell ; Marsden, Air Ben jamin Tindale ; Okarito, Air N. Friend ; Stafford, Air B. Lyons. A notification was received from the Department, to the ef.OH- for the period ending December 31, 1924, certain class books only should be used, with the proviso that during th--1923 no teacher shall make any change in the class books the pupils have already been required to purchase. A circular was received from the Department, notifying that in future Technical School pupils must sit for the intermediate certificate examination in order to qualify for appointment as pupil teachers or probationers. It was agreed to notify all Technical Schools in the Canterbury Education District in order to avoid any’ misunderstanding when applications for vacancies should be under consideration.
A letter was received from the Wellington Education Board, asking the Board, in the case of teachers resigning at the end of a school year, to pay salary up to January 31st. It was pointed out that under the provisions of the Act teachers are already entitled to January salary. It was agreed to obtain further information as to what is desired. With regard to teachers appointed in lieu of pupil teachers, it was agreed to ask the Department for an explicit interpretation of the Act under which teachers cannot apply for another position within twelve months, except in the case of a first appointment. The report was adopted. Tn its report the Agricultural and Technical Committee reported that it was agreed that at the end of the year a tabulated report should be prepared giving information with regard to the work, both practical and theoretical, done in all the Board’s schools. The Navy League and Victoria League asked the Board for its approval of a proposal to offer certificates for essays in Standards V. and VI. 'The Board granted permission subject to the approval of the Schoo] Committees.
