NEW GRANDSTAND

ASSET TO VICTORIA PARK. The determination of the Grey- , mouth Trotting Club to leave nothing undone that makes ior the comfort of their ever-increasing number of patrons, is demonstrated by their decision to erect a new two-storey grandstand at Victoria Park. I lie ( plans, prepared by Messrs S. and A. Luttrell, the well-known Christchurch architects, prove that the stand will be of the latest design and first-class in every way, having all the most modern appointments. The new stand, in addition to providing for the efficient and convenient conduct of the Club’s business, will be suitable for use by all kinds of Clubs and societies who may have occasion to visit Victoria Park. Mr. A. E. Luttrell arrived from Christchurch on Saturday evening, bringing the plans with him, and today a “Star" reporter was permitted to inspect them. They show that pi flvision has been made for everyone even the Press—and that the new stand will be all that is claimed for it. The ground floor has an area of 150 ft. x 35ft., and by an “oversail" the floor is increased to 150 ft. by 42ft., with a capacity of seating under pressure approximately 1000 people. The ground floor provides for a tea room with all necessary appointments, at the north end, of 50ft. x 35ft., entered from an attractive vestibule, which will make the tea room very cosy and a comfortable retreat between races. The centre of the. stand is devoted to the Club s business, and will accommodate the secretary, stewards, and other officials, whilst at the south end will be located the riders, drivers, and trainers’ rooms, including dressing and weighing accommodation. The inconvenience caused to the club at past meetings by insufficient room will be removed, and the new quarters will allow the Club’s officials to exercise immediate supervision, making for efficient control of the meetings. The seating floor at the north end of the stand is apportioned off for the stewards, members, and guests, who will be stationed almost opposite the winning post. The centre of the building will be the quarters of the | general public, and the south end | will accommodate the trainers, riders, and drivers. The main staircase, in ■ the centre of the stand gives quick and easy access and exit for the public. The whole of the structure on the ground floor, including the staircases, is of reinforced concrete, thus minimising the danger from fire. The stand will also possess adequate cloak room and lavatory arrangements. Nothing has been overlooked by the architects, and the new' stand, which should be available for the October- Meeting, should be satisfactory to everyone. The construction is being carried out by day labour under the supervision of Mr. J. Hart.
