The body has not been recovered. MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE. HAMILTON, This the Supreme Court to-day, John C. Johnstone was charged with manslaughter arising out of the recent accident in which an elderly woman named Maria Turner was knocked down by a motor car driven by accused, and died an hour later. The jury returned a verdict of “Not Guilty.” SHIPPING TRANSACTION. DUNEDIN, August 31. Two vessels, the Shahiston and the Cosmos, which have been under charter to the Union Steamship Coy. for some time past, have been purchased by the Company, but it has not been decided on what routes the vessels will be employed. The former ship, which is at present at- Lyttelton, changed hands for £160,000. TAILORING AWARD. CHRISTCHURCH, August 30.—The Arbitration Court’s Award for the tailoring trade fixes the hours of work at 44 per week after January Ist. The minimum wages for males, including p'ressers, are £4 10s, plus 5s bonus, and for females £2 10s per week for the first six months alter the completion of apprenticeship, and thereafter not less than £2 15s, plus 5s bonus. Piecework is to be paid at the rate of Is 4J>d per hour for males, and lid for females. WITHDRAWAL OF MONOWAI. DUNEDIN, August 30. —Owing to the coal shortage, the Union Steam Ship Company has decided to withdraw the Monowai Horn the East Coast service on her arrival at Dunedin this week. She will lay up at Port mers indefinitely. The Mararoa, which has been reconditioned for the Napier-Auckland service, is also held up at Port Chalmers owing to the coal shortage. SUGAR SHORTAGE. DUNEDIN, August 30.—Having no sugar to work with, the manager of Messrs R. Hudson and Oo.’s big confectionery-making establishment, has been compelled to close down. With the view of keeping going as many hands as possible, a general overhaul and smartening up of the premises is ordered, but this of course, is only a temporary expedient- Since nobody can say when the next consignment of sugar will arrive it is impossible to even guess when the manufacture will start again.
