PRIVATE J. JACOBS,

Amongst the names of West' Coasters in the latest casualty list there appeared the ‘ name of Private J. Jacobs, son of Mr Jacobs, an esteemed Kaiata resident. “Jack” was well and favourably, known all over the West Coast, "being educated at the Grey District High School and latterly following farming pursuits. His many friends in all parts of the district will regret that ho has been called to pay the supreme sacrifice for his country, and much sympathy will be felt for his family in the:,r loss. CAPTAIN F. Y. BROWN. Mr J. C. Brown, Westport, received a private telegram on Thursday night, conveying the sad news that Captain Frederick Vincent Brown, eldest son of the late Brigadier-General C. H. Brown, formerly of Greymonth, had been killed in action. The late Captain Brown was well known throughout the Const, especially at Denniston, where he lived for a number of years. He was trained at Duntroon College, Sydney, going there from v College, and on return to New Zealand was appointed an instructor in artillery of the I4ew Zealand forces at Trentham and Featherston. He went to France just before the battle of Messines, in win* 'i his father, Brigadier-General Brown, was killled, and he attend the latter’s funeral. Captain Brown, a most capable, brilliant officer, was only 24 years of age. A younger brother is now on his way to the front and the youngest hrofner, who been on the western front, has been invalided home. Much sympathy will be felt for Mrs Brown and family in this second bereavement caused by the war.
