Tho Northern Company’s steamer Rotomahana and (lie Devonport ferry steamer Kestrel collided last ni'dit off the end. of (lie railway wharf so severely as to cause a momentary panic on board the Kestrel, which was carrying a large number if passengers. An enquiry is to be held by the Customs, pending which neither captain will mane any statement. A passenger by the Kestrel states that the vessels were near tho wharf, when tho Rotomahana coming up showed a. red light, while tho Kestrel displayed tho green. mahana, which a.pnroached, showing green and red, and then altered its course a little, showing red. The Rotomahana was then 250 yards away. The Kestrel, noticing tho change of course, blew three whistles, and went full speed astern, Tho Rotomahana struck the Kestrel’s ppt’ 'bow, cutting into the woodwork slightly. The force of tho imnact was very perceptible, and it was a narrow escape.
