LATE SIR MAGI POMARE
ASHES LIE IN STATE FUNERAL SERVICE (Tor Press Association). Wellington. Aug. 5. There was a large and representative attendance at the funeral service for the late Sir Maui Pomare at'St. Paul’s pro-Cathedral Tlie principal mourners were Lady Pomare, his two sons and daughter, her mother, Mrs Woodbine Johnstone and sister. Mrs R. Sherr<u-t. Tlie Chief Jim ice. Cabinet Ministers and members of all branches of the legislature and departments woie present. Mr A. C. Day represented Government House. TTie address was by---Canon M illiams He said that Sir Maui Pomare was one who always had the welfare ol his race at heart. Prominent positions held by members of the Maori race should he an encouraging assurance to all that the native who possessed ability and diligently cultivated it, had an equal opportunity with <the pa. keh a of rising to the highest position. The casket now lies in state a+ Parliament House. A party of Maoris assembled on tlie steps, greeted it with wailing. A ceremonial and welcome address was made to Lady Pomare by Hon. A. T. Ngata who afterwards led the mourning Maoris in lament for tlie dead. HISTORIC BURIAL GROUND

Upon a. high h'uff within the enclosure of Manukorilii pa overlooking the town and placid river of A\ a tar a is the almost completed vault which on Sunday will receive the casket containing the ashes of Sir Ma.u Pomare. The vaut: will ultimately bo the base of a monument in memory of Sir Maui and another great Maori leader. Wiremu Kin.gi.
