GALE IN SAMOA.
VESSELS ASHORE AT APIA SEII IOIIS DAMAGE DONE SOME LOSS OE LIKE REPORTED (Aust. ami N.Z. Cable). Suva, January 5. Apia reporta that a gale at Samoa oa January 1 did much damage to plantations. Breadfruit, trees came down in hundreds. The steamer Lady .Roberts dragged her anchors and went ashore on the inner reef.. Nelson’s launch, the Siliafai, was wrecked while' attempting to gain a. safe anchorage. Seas destroyed the green light at the harbour entrance. This was set on. solid concrete, pillars of 20 toils, set four feet in the reef. The gale raged all day, switching from south-east to south-west and back again. The roads it re blocked with fallen frees and telephone wires are down. It is feared that, the damage to the south coast was severe. .Many tales are down. Some loss of life is reported. The greatest velocity of the wind was 72 miles per hour, and the lowest .reading of the barometer 29.11 inches.
