Nine Victoria Crosses have been awarded, including one to Corporal Leslie Wilton Andrews, of the New Zealand infantry, for conspicuous bravery while in charge of a small party, t a kins the enemy's position. Corpl. Andrews' objective was a machine-gun post, which had been located in an isolated building. Leading his men forward, he encountered unexpectedly a machine-gun post which was holding up the advance of another company. The New Zealander immediately attacked the position, capturing the ' machine and killing several of the crew.
He then continued the attack on the machine-gun post which was his original objective. He displayed great ski-1 and determination in his disposition of his men, finally capturing the post, killing several of the enemy, and putting to flight the remainder. Andrews' conduct throughout was unexampled for cool daring, initiative, and fine leadership. His magnificent example was a fine stimulant to bis comrades.
