THE MYSTERY OF OIL.
Tho geological occurrence and origin of petroleum formed tho subject of a paper by Messrs M. Ongley and AY. Gibson which was read at a meeting of the geological section of tho AVellington Philosophical Society on AVednesday night, The paper gave an account of tho several theories proposed, and the various indications of the presence of an oilfield. It was asserted that the most favoured theory is that the oil is formed by tho decomposition of organic matter at tho surface of the land or sea bottom, and its subsequent deposition along with clay as actual globules of oil. For the collection of an oil pool a. porous rock, such a.s sand, was necessary, but unfortunately no oil sand has yet been found in New Zealand.
