Feilding J.C. Spring Meeting.

1 ' "■ |J w«vaM«MaMB« FIRST DAY. | The spring meetiug under the auspi- ! ces of the Feilding Jockey Club was held yesterday and to-day. The weather being favorable yesterday, theve was a very fair attendance, about one thousand persons being present. There were no serious accidents during the day to mar the pleasure of the gather- j ing, although there were mishaps in two races— one in the Hack Hurdles, when Whetu fell in jumping the hurdle opposite the stand, and G. Johnston, the rider, was unsealed ; the other was in the last race of the day, the Fitzroy Hack Flying, when Wilson fell through being jammed, the rider (T. Wilson) escaping with a shaking. On the whole the racing was interesting and the finishes close ; thus, with the large fields, a very enjoyable day's sport was the result. As the favorite only won in four out of the eight events, the dividends were fairly good, ranging from £2 13s to .fc'lo ss, the latter price being paid by Light, who won the Spring Hurdles after a splendid finish. Mr Bristol not having had any luck for some time past with Light, this was to be the Sou'wester gelding's last race for at least a term— if he did not win this event. However, Light justified his acceptance, and paid his supporters a handsome dividend. The principal race of the day fell to the favorite Crusoe, who won by half a length after a good race. Gowrie was favorite for the Flying Handicap, and won comfortably, while Silverlock, who is owned by Mr C. Bath, of Bea- : consfield, came as a surprise to many and won the Maiden Hack Flat in good style by a length, paying £7 14s to his admirers. In this race was left at the post, backing away from the starting barrier immediately it was raised, and consequently she did not race. In the Waifcuna" Hack Hurdles the winner turned up in Verbena. Uila beat the favorite (Philanthropist) in the Aorangi Hack Flat, but the latter would probably have won had he been better ridden. Sentry proved a "good thing" for the Fitzroy Hack Flying, winning fairly easily by a length. All the officials worked hard to make the gathering a success and they are deserving of the congratulations of the public for the result of their efforts. As usual the bulk of the work fell to the lot of the energetic secretary, Mr E. Goodbehere, who was equal the occasion. The stewards were Messrs W A L Bailey, W A Sandilands, B Gosling, J Saunders, W G Haybittle, and J C Halcombe ; Mr E F Blundell, the treasurer, who is also a steward, not being able to get about yet, •was, however, present and witnessed the proceedings from a carriage. Tiie' starter, Mr T. Cameron, got the fields away well together, and he was in no way to blame for a fractious horse being left at the post. The close finishes were the result of Mr J. E. Henry's handicapping, while Mr W. H. Hartgill gave every satisfaction in the responsible position as judge. Mr W. G. Haybitble, as clerk of the scales, assisted by Mr L. Gorton, were attentive to their duties, while Mr J. Scotfcvuade an efficient timekeeper, and MrO. McDonnell aet'-cl as clerk of course, the outside and inside publican's booths were under the care of Mr D. P. Barrett, the popular host of the Manchester Hotel, and needless to say the liquid refreshments were all that could be desired. Mr W. S. Dust-in, the well-known caterer, of Wanganui, had the dining rooms, and the luncheon provided by him was the best yet seen on this course. The menu was of the most varied kind and everything was of the best, while the attendance was very good. The proceedings were enlivened by the Feilding Band. Last, but by no means least, the recent improvements were greatly appreciated by habitues of the course. The new grandstand proved a great convenience over the old one, while the terrace in front adds to the general appearance of the ground. and while the races were on and the terrace and stand were crowded quite a picturesque appearance was given to the lawn. The amount put through the totalisator during the day was L 4482, as against L 4154, but it must be remembered there were eight races this year while there were seven last.
