THE CAREY CUP

FOR NATIVE DAIRYMEN MB .1. 11 IBA’S THIRD ’SUCCESS For ttie third year in succession, Mr ,1. I lira of Onewhcro, has won the Carey cup for supplying high grade produce to the Franklin Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited. When the Company was first formed. among its suppliers were a large number of natives from the Kohanga and Onewhero districts. With a view to encouraging the natives to produce good quality cream, one of tlie original directors, Mr H. Carey, formerly of Puni, donated a cup to be awarded to Hie Native supplier with the highest grading average This was won outright. " The next year Mr Carey donated a second cup which was to be won twice in succession before becoming {lie property of any supplier. This was won outright by Mr .1. Hira. Mr Carey next donated a third cup to be won three years in succession or five times at intervals before- it could be won outright. This cup was competed for during Hie past season and was won by Mr Hira.

At the annual meeting of the shareholders field al Tuakau yesterday. Mr Carey announced that his idea in donating the cup was to endeavour,_ by competition, to improve conditions among Native suppliers. In reply Mr Hira said Hie Native suppliers were deeply grateful to tbe directors of the company for tbe way they had fostered and improved dairying among the Maoris.

II was stated that Mr 1 lira's grade was very high and was well above the average of the great majority of pakeha and native suppliers.
