THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

j VtORK OF THE OUTSIDE STAFF ! SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL GROUND ! PATH AT GATE.SEALED

A good deal of useful work has been undertaken by the council’s outside staff during the last week or two, stated the foreman, Mr Finn, in his report to the last council meeting. He stated that the grader had given the highways attention and that Queen street and Opaheke road had had the scarifier through the roughest portions. The report added: — “Cesspits: Cesspits throughout the borough have been treated with kerosene. •

“Cemetery: A platform for spoil from graves has been provided. The trees, as authorised, have been removed but are not vet cleaned up. “Footpath sealing: The path in the soldiers’ memorial ground and the path outside the gate, for a distance of one chain, have been sealed. The path on the southern side of Young’s road and the intersection at Cliff road, has 'had a light sealing coat and it has been continued along the Great South Road, on the western path, to Coles Crescent.

“Barberry hedges: Barberry hedges around Prince Edward Park have been cultivated. Similar work on the Railway Reserve (Massey Park), is well forward.

“Greyhound fence replaced: The fence on the greyhound course at Massey Park has been replaced. The fences round Massey Park and Prince Edward Park have been rendered sheep proof. Springs were placed on three gates, but these have apparently been stolen.

“Footpath maintenance: The path on the western side of Railway Street West has been partially cleaned with' the grader, and the work is now being completed by hand.

“Grassing: The grass has been sown on the children’s playing area, Cole’s Crescent, and on the bank in Mr Wallis’ property. “No. 13 scheme: Good progress has been made with the roading job in Manse road. The path in Union street has been completed. The men could be used now in reducing the rise at the intersection of East street.

“Levelling area at courts: This work at the tennis courts is now well in hand. Owing to the new rules regarding authority being obtained for work, the foreman suggests the council ask for authority to undertake the following work: Form footpath and water channel in Clarke road: Great South Road on eastern side from Young's road to Trentham road, thence on the southern side of Trentham road to the end; also for future work to re-,shape East street from Queen street to Nelson street.
