Edinburgh Street to be Main Highway

CHANGE AGREED TO

SUBSTITUTION FOR SEDDON ST.

HIGHWAYS BOARD DECISION

The Main Highways Board has agreed to the Pukekohe Borough Council’s request to substitute Edinburgh street in the borough section of the Drury-Awhitu (via Waiuku) main highway as the highway, for Seddon street.

This information was contained in the following letter from the No. 2 District Council of the Main Highways Board, Mr F. S. Dyson. “With reference to the representations made by your council to the Main Highways Board on the occasion of its last visit to Pukekohe, I have to advise that the question of the substitution of Edinburgh street for Seddon street as main highway was referred to Ibis office for report. A report was forwarded to my head office on June 21, and I have now to acquaint you with the terms of the Main Highways Board’s decision as under: —

“The board feels that there is some merit, in the council’s application for the revocation of the Seddon street portion of highway in favour of the declaration of Edinburgh street.

“With regard to the deviation necessary at the top end of Edinburgh street, the board would not be prepared to find any portion of the cost of kerbing and channelling. If, however, the borough council is prepared to meet Ihese costs the board would be agreeable to the exchange of routes and would subsidise at the rate of £3 for £1 the cost of legalising, forming, metalling and sealing the deviation and of reconstructing and sealing Edinburgh street. “I shall he glad if you will let me know if this proposal is acceptable to your council. As soon as your reply is received the necessary steps will be taken to effect the change.” On the motion of. the Mayor, Mr J. Routly, it was decided to intimate to the representative of the Highways Council, that the borough council was prepared to agree to the proposals in the communication. Mr G. H. Armstrong said that if nothing came of the proposed borough loan for roading works, the council would he wise if it undertook the work required in Edinburgh street. The Mayor: The. Highways Board might undertake Hie work itself.
