BUCKLAND NOTES. "BRING AND BUY" FUNCTION. . CHURCH FUNDS AUGMENTED. £ A successful • -bring and) buy" atteri noon, in aid of the funds of- St. Paul*| church, was held in the Buckland hah on Tuesday last. Mrs Cowie won the quoits competition, with Mrs Butcher second. The winners of guessing competitions were as follows: Mrs Coxhead, cushion; Miss Jefferis, a dinner;'Mrs Hewitt, a cushion: Miss Jefferis. box of cakes: Miss K. Butcher, tray cloth; Miss Piggott, box of chocolates: Miss A. Bullock, doll and cot.
Mesdames Stringer and Otter were in charge of the afternoon tea; Mesdames King and Osmond sold produce and cakes: and Mesdames Danes and Wilcox were in charge of the competitions. The ladies of St. Paul's church thank all who helped to make the afternoon a success.
ARARIMU SCHOOL PICNIC AND SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL DAY. In beautifully fine weather the Ararimu picnic and sports were held in Mrs Markham senr's. paddock recently. There were races for all the children and every child received a prize. Events for adults brought forth good numbers for each race and keen competition was the order of the day. Results are as follow: Married men's race. 100 yards: Mr Turner I, Mr Otto 2. Single men's. 100 yards: Mr Dick 1. Mr Strange 2. Married ladies'. 100 yards: Mrs Turner 1, Mrs Ellis 2. Single men, 440 yards: Mr Dick 1, Mr Brewer 2. Single ladies: Miss D. Seay 1. Girls under 17 years: Miss E. Franks 1. Boys' bicycle race: J. Dunn 1, J. Franks 2. High jump, boys under 15: J. Dunn 1, M. Jackson 2. Boys under 17 years, 220 yards: L. Shaw 1, M. Regan 2. At the conclusion of the programme Mrs Markham senr., presented the prizes to the winners. Mr Jas. Shaw, chairman of the school committee, thanked all those who had helped to make the picnic such a success.
ONEWHERO NEWS.
HOCKEY CLUB'S DANCE, , f
The recently-formed Onewhero Ladies' Hockey Club held Its first dance on Friday evening. There was a large attendance, which included visitors from Tuakau, Pukekawa and Te Kohanga. The proceeds exceeded £7. Music was played by the Onewhero string band. Misses M. Dyer and A. Cathcart acted as mistresses of ceremonies. Novelty dances added to the enjoyment of the evening. Step dances were given by Mr B. Kilburn. Good progress is being made with the forming and metalling of the unmetalled portions of Kauri road. The work is being undertaken by unemployed relief workers,
PUKEKAWA NEWS. TENNTS TOUBNAMENT. - The final of the Pukekawa Tennis Club's combined handicap doubles tournament, was played on Saturday afternoon. Mrs G. Bell and E. Hunter defeating Miss M. Logan and M. Tippins, 31—22. In the absence of the president, Mr G. L. Martin. Mr O. Lindberg presented each of the winners with a silver cup. Unusual interest was centred in the competition, which, it is felt, greatly improved the standard of play. The following will represent the Pukekawa club against Waiau Pa on Saturday in the final of the Franklin Association B grade competition: Mrs Bell. Miss Lindberg, Misses A. and M. Logan. Miss Wells, Miss Bell, O. Lindberg. A. Bell. Martin, L. Lindberg, L. Morrison and Tippins.
