MAUKU-PATUMAHOE.

W.D.F.U. MEET

The Mauku and Patumahoe branch of the Women's division, Farmers' Union, held its monthly meeting in the Patumahoe hall on Wednesday afternoon. The president, Mrs S. Rowe, presided over a full attendance of members and friends. After the formal business had been dealt with, Mrs Suckling gave a demonstration of spinning wool. This was very interesting indeed, wool, spun, dyed, and ready for knitting .being shown, also rugs made. Mrs : Suckling also read a paper on "Materialism," which was listened to with attention .-... , .■'.

Mrs Lichfield exhibited- some very useful slippers made from the fleece; the sheep skin being used for the soles. Mrs Green donaled a small mattress with wool filling. The branch is be-

ginning to realise, the number of uses raw wool can be put to.

A competition finding names of advertisements, arranged .by Mrs Cartwright, "created some amusement. Another competition was won by Miss

Jackson. Orders were taken for a cookery •book, sales of produce and cakes were made and library books

exchanged. Several members, procured the badge of the division. : '; The membership now totals .35.

■ The ■ meeting decided that all members should bring an article made from something old to next meeting, and to invite the president, the secretary, and members of the Onewhero branch to attend and judge the articles.

*Fhe hostesses ■-.. were, Mesdames Chandler, Hill and Larsen. \. i Mrs A. H. Menzies, one of the vicepresidents, is leaving the district. The president made a presentation to Mrs Menzies of a tea-cup, saucer and plate,

together with a pretty, bouquet ; of vio-lets-and Iceland poppies. All members joined in wishing Mrs Menzies happiness and prosperity in her future home. • All stood and raised their teacups to Mrs Menzies with musical

honours. Mrs Menzies replied sayirig she had received a pleasant surprise and thanked the branch for the dainty gift and expressed her regret at leaving.
