PROTECTION.
HOW IT CAN BE GIVEN.
NO STEP IN THE T3ARK. "Says the "Matamata Record" — ' There are two ways in which the Dominion's secondary industries can be assisted. Firstly, as is done in older countries, by means of advertising campaigns, and secondly by protective tariffs and the like. The first entails no taxation on the • masses and is sound and legitimate •procedure which can be carried into ■ effect by the leaders of the industries / affected.
The second method entails taxation of the masses, as well as other industries, and this being so, should on no account be granted unless the industry concerned is prepared to -publicly put its cards on the table, and show why it should be protected. If the public has to pay, then it • should be told why. Until those secondary industries which clamour for protection arc prepared to do this. and to set their house in order, jusl so long will their proposals be suspect.
