BRITAIN’S FREEZE-UP SET BACK PRODUCTION
(Rec. 10.15 a.m.) LONDON, May 2. The ‘ Board of Trade Journal ’ gives examples of llow the February freezeup affected the production of goods for home consumption in Britain. The stoppages halved the production of leather footwear, and reduced the production of woollen and non-woollen cloth bv one-third. There were also substantial drops in the production of prams and tobacco, but during the first quarter of 1947 there were increases in the production of matches and games equipment. Sir Stafford Cripps, at a Pre6s conference, said Britain’s Aretie winter Cost the nation nearly 900,000 tons of colil—6oo,ooo at the pits and 215,000 through transport difficulties.
