TOLL OF WINTER

FOUR MILLION SHEEP DIE BRITAIN'S DISASTROUS FREEZE-UP (Rec. 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, April 28. “ It is estimated that 4,000,000 sheep—2o per cent, of the total in England—died in the winter freeze-up,” said the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Tom Williams. “ Never in living memory has nature dealt such grave and cruel blows.” Mr Williams added that some areas lost 80 to 90 per cent of their flocks in the freeze-up. Most were buried in snow-drifts. One farmer’s flock was reduced from 1,000 to 64. It was a national disaster, affecting the meat V supply for years ahead. The floods were another disaster, and at the worst period 690,000 acres were under water.
