SHORTAGE OF ALKALIS
PLANT EXTENSION IN AUSTRALIA OVER £1,000,009 TO BE SPENT (Rec. 1T.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 29. Imperial Chemical Industries of Australia and New Zealand Ltd. will spend over £1,000,000 on alkali plant extensions at Osborne, South Australia. It is planned l to complete the work in two years. The new plant will double the yearly output to a full capacity of nearly 100,000 tons. The alkalis to be produced l , which include soda ash, caustic soda, bicarbonate of soda, and calcium chloride, are all in short supply, and are vital to Australia’s economy. The company’s plant at Botany, Sydney, has been strike-boundl for more than six months.
