RETURN TO WORK
MANY FACTORIES STILL CLOSED
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, March 3. About 800,000 returned to work when industrial power, which was cut on February 7 was restored to-day in London, the south-east and north->vest. They represented, about half those thrown out of work. The rest will return to work when factories have-es-tablished stocks of raw materials and coal. ,
The London transport felt the strain. Most of the .workmen’s services, which have been almost deserted for three weeks; were packed out. The London power stations had to cut supplies for 45 minutes soon after the switch-on in order to meet the sudden demand. Electricity undertakings, however, are now stocked above a safe minimum level.
Housewives,- shopkeepers, and office workers are still restricted and were put on their honour not to use electricity outside the permitted hours.
